The Art Of Handwriting…!

The Art of handwriting is a beautiful skill. It’s quite amazing to think that this art is unique to each individual. There is something very satisfying about lifting a pen or pencil and making your own indelible, distinct mark on paper. Nothing quite beats the excitement of receiving a handwritten note or letter unexpectedly in the post. Many of us have in a box stored safely somewhere at home containing letters from our parents, grandparents and old friends. We consider them treasured possessions and they are! However in today’s digital age, the art of handwriting is under attack from the might of the keyboard! Texting, emails and social media have replaced written letters. Even greeting cards are now being sent electronically. But fear not! We are delighted to report that the pupils here in Scoil Barra are playing their part in reversing this trend as evidenced by their enthusiastic interest in and precision about their penmanship. School handwriting co-ordinator Orla Lande is thrilled with recent progress and very high standards achieved. The school’s Annual Handwriting Competition was a huge success once again and the winners at the various class levels were presented with their prizes on Friday last. There were lots of smiling faces at the prize giving ceremony and some cursive script samples to die for!
They say that handwriting is a window to our soul. If such is the case, I suppose we’d better get writing. The first scratch of a HB pencil or pen across the fresh page of a notebook and we’ll be hooked! What are we waiting for……?
