Junior Infant Stem 2022 – 2023 Science Science Week – Balancing For Science Week, Ms Moriarty’s Junior Infants undertook a balancing experiment. First, they tried to balance the raw egg on a hard surface. (They had a difficult time keeping the egg balanced!). Then, they made a tiny mound of salt on a hard, smooth surface. Very carefully, they balanced the egg on top of the salt. Using their steady hands, they succeeded in getting the egg to balance. How cool is that?! Science Week – Skittle Experiment Here’s a fun skittle science experiment that Ms Moriarty’s Junior Infants completed for Science Week. The children watched in amazement as the colours spread! 2021 – 2022 Science Energy and Forces – Space Week For Science Week, the Junior Infant classes learned all about space. They watched videos of Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield brushing his teeth and wringing a washcloth in space which they found very funny! The children learned about the harsh living conditions in space due to the lack of gravity and explored the importance of a space suit. The children then designed a spacesuit. They used cotton wool to keep their astronaut warm. They made sure their astronaut had an air supply by giving them a helmet. Technology Documenting Play The Junior Infant pupils were very busy using technology to document their Aistear play. The pupils used the images that they captured to review their play once they had finished. They always enjoy planning, doing and reviewing. Well done everybody! Engineering Engineers Week – Young Engineers at Work Check out Ms Moloney’s Junior Infant Class working as Engineers during their play for Engineers Week. Well done! Your creations look amazing. There are certainly some budding engineers in Junior Infants this year! Aistear – The Supermarket This week’s theme for Aistear is ‘The Supermarket’. Some of the Junior Infants were busy becoming engineers in their small world and construction areas. We had some pet shops, bike shops and even a toy shop. What fun! Let’s build a gate STEM challenges are activities where students design and build solutions to problems using a combination of science, technology, engineering and math skills. Our first challenge was based on our Halloween poem ‘5 Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate.’ The objective was to build a gate for 5 pumpkins to sit on, but the pumpkins had to sit on the gate….without falling off and that was very tricky. The children needed to work with their partners to plan, do and review if needed. We saw some groups think outside the box; some balancing their pumpkins on each other, some changing their building materials as they felt their gate wasn’t sturdy enough and others reviewing the construction of their gate to make a hole in the gate for 1 pumpkin to sit on. There was such excitement in the air as the children rose to the challenge. Check out the photos of how we got on during the activity. Engineering in play Junior Infant pupils love to make many interesting constructions during play. We think they are super creative!
