Ms Cremins’ 1st Class have decided to adopt the tree outside their door. They will take a photo each month on the 8th and see how the tree changes as the months go by. Their first photo was taken on the day of the school Nature Trek in October and the second photo was taken on a beautiful Autumn day on November 8th. They will keep us posted with each new photo!
Materials – Magic Milk
Milk is a liquid and has what is called ‘surface tension’. This means that all the milk molecules line up on the surface and form a very small barrier between the liquid and the air on top. When we add the liquid soap we break this surface tension and all the colours are carried on the back of the milk molecules and away from the soap!
Living Things – Trees in our environment
1st class love to check out the trees in the fantastic Regional Park. We love to see the trees change colour and change how they look through the different seasons!
Materials – Lava Lamps
1st class had great fun creating their own lava lamps! They put a drop of food colouring into different glasses. They then filled ΒΌ of the glasses with water and added some vegetable oil. To complete the lava lamps, they dropped one seltzer tablet into the bottle and looked on as colourful bubbles oozed up and down through the oil.
Materials – Skittle Experiment
Mr Hume’s 1st class had fun exploring chromatography. They arranged the skittles in a single row coloured pattern around the edge of the plate. They then poured over enough warm water to cover all the skittles and the plate itself. They watched and waited as a rainbow appeared on the plate. The colours moved towards the middle and created a whirl of colour.
Engineering
Engineers Week
Mr Hume’s First Class enjoyed constructing buildings and other shapes using wooden blocks. They also had great fun creating their own names using Lego.
